be teachable

Much has been exposed during these pandemic months. Some of it has been pretty ugly. And, if we’re honest, it’s not just about the other guy. I imagine most ::read: all:: have struggled with what we’ve reflected inside the four walls of ourselves while our social circles tightened around us. My prayer is that in the exposed and alone we’ve found ourselves teachable.

In the studio ::as in life:: teachable means making space to fail – to mindfully approach that uncomfortable arena and be ready to accept what you never knew or forgot to remember and then begin again.

I’ve been drawing some on paper, lately. This is nothing new, I’ve always drawn. However, adjacent to clay there’s clearly been a different approach. I have frustrated the process of learning with memories of what I once knew ::or thought I knew:: I want to be teachable. Recognizing my misconceptions wrapped in almost familiar processes is the first step. Be teachable.

Go See Art

Since vaccines have begun rolling out and we’ve become more expertly aware of how to mitigate exposure, exhibitions have become available [with limits] for in-person viewing. This month I have work included in two shows; 42nd Annual Contemporary Crafts at the Mesa Arts Center and Clay Today at the Shemer Art Center.

The 42nd Annual Contemporary Crafts exhibition is a national juried show highlighting innovation and quality in traditional craft mediums. The exhibition opens February 12, 2021 and runs through April 18, 2021. The Mesa Arts Center is offering timed ticketing for the exhibition. Admission is free. You can reserve your tickets here. Check out the online catalog for the show.

Clay Today is a regional juried exhibition of ceramic artwork reflective of current trends in form and style. The exhibition opens February 24, 2021 through April 8, 2021.
