Process

When I think in terms of drawing, I think more in regard to making marks.  To me, that is the beauty of the process.  Drawings can certainly be qualified in many ways: illustrations, renderings, sketches and the like.  But when you allow the line to exist on it's own, it's but a mark.  Yet, a mark that the artist responds to.  The lines develop the character of the image - one is simply a response to another.

When I'm drawing on the clay, I draw throughout the clay process.  Some lines are drawn on wet clay, some on bone dry clay and others on bisque clay.  This allows the image to develop as I respond to the marks in conjunction with the glazing and firing process. It helps to have a good idea where you are going with the final piece. Keep detailed notes.
